Name of wine: Sean Thackrey Pleiades XXI Old Vines (Red blend, Bolinas, California) Alcohol 14.9%
Price paid: $25
Where purchased: Vino!, San Francisco, California
Tasting Notes and my Comments: This one’s got legs! Nice, long, legs. The label says “California Red Table Wine”, but I think it’s more like one of the most wonderful eclectic red blends I have ever had. This wine is special. It’s magical! Thank you Sean Thackrey! I hope to one day try all of your out-of-this-world/not-of-this-Earth bottlings, from Andromeda to Sirius to Orion. Drink now or let it age for a bit. This is a blend of Syrah, Sangiovese, Mourvèdre, Barbera, Carignane, Petite Sirah, Viognier, among others. Tasted August 4th, 2012.
Color: The color reminds me of Pinot Noir. And rumor has it that XXI is more sangiovese than pinot. It is filtered and translucent. Like black cherry juice.
Nose: Sweet raisins. As it opened up I detected the fragrance of black curant and a lot more. Quince paste, definitely quince paste!
Palate: Firm tannins. Silky-smooth mouth feel. A medium finish, but highly complex and wonderful blending. A mouthful of sublime fruit explodes in every sip.
Food: You could drink this one by itself all day long. A great food pairing would be roast beef or prime rib with horseradish and au jus.
Winemakers notes: (From Sean Thackrey)
None.
UPDATE: New release for 2012: Sean Thackrey Pleiades XXII Old Vines!
